Books, Books, Books

What role does reading play in your life?

Discuss these questions in pairs:

  1. What do you like reading?
  2. What is your cup of tea? (fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, travel writing, humour, short stories, picture books, spiritual books, children’s books, diarists, etc.)
  3. Do you have a favourite writer? Which author or types of reading have been most important to you?
  4. Where do you like reading?
  5. Do you like reading in silence or do you like reading where there are other people? Both? When in silence? When in public?
  6. Do you scribble in the margins or on book covers when you read?
  7. Has your reading attitude changed over the years?
  8. How much time do you spend each week reading for pleasure?
  9. What value/s do you attribute to reading?
  10. What is the mental image you have of a good reader?
  11. Do you read paper books, digital books? Do you read on your Kindle? I-Pad? I-Phone? Computer? If so, has that changed your way of reading? How?

What would your life be like without books?  Look at the following videoclip taken from “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury.

Watch the following video and pay attention to:

–          Use of music and when it changes

–          Use of colours and when they change

–          What is the whirlwind symbolic of?

–          What does the book in the red cover represent?

–          Who does the boy represent?

–          A book playing the piano? Why?

–          What does the boy do to books?

–          Why do people visit his house?

–          When does the video finish?

–          What does this video mean to you?

–          What is effective about not having any dialogue?

–          If you were asked to write some captions for a few scenes, what would your write?

Now write your poem following this pattern:

A book is not …

A book is …

A book is not …

A book is …

Repeat it as many time you deem it necessary.  Repetition is one of the possible features of poetry, isn’t it?

  1. A book is not only paper
A book is the perfect partner wherever you want to
A book is not only words
A book is offering you possibilities whenever you want to
A book is not only narration
A book is the help to imagine whatever you want to

  2. A book is not a life.
A book is a mixture of lives.

A book is not a life.
A book is a mixture of lives.

A book is not black and white.
A book is a cradle of colours.

A book is not black and white.
A book is plenty of colours.

A book is a mixture of lives.
A book is a plenty cradle of colours.

  3. A book is not a one night-stand
A book is like your own pet,
it’s someone you have to understand
    and not
    forget
    but
    protect.
A book is not a sack, a weathered wooden shack.
A book is your missing part,
    it gives you sight
    it shows you morality
    ethics
and it is not a guideline
    (but a lighthouse).
A book is an imaginary friend
    it’s a harbor,
    a resort
it’s the gate away each one needs and wants,
it’s the hope for a better part of you
    it soothes longing
    it’s the in-between waiting room.
